Where do our buyers come from?

When it comes to listing and selling a property, knowing your audience is vital

You may be interested to learn that the majority of buyers, purchasing properties here in Taupo, are locals...

Surprising? With all of the investment in the town with the town centre transformation and many new developments, the natural beauty of the surrounding area, the positioning of the town in the north island (being so close to Auckland, Rotorua, the coast, etc.), the flexibility of remote or hybrid working, the affordability of property in comparison to larger cities close by; all of these factors make Taupo a pretty desirable place to lay roots.

As you can see by our graph, recent numbers indicate that half of all our buyers are local (from the Taupo and Southern Lake regions), with Waikato and Hawkes Bay in a tied second, both with 14% of buyers, followed by Auckland with 9%* (source: Bayleys Taupo Purchaser Statistics, January - June 2023). This is only a slight shuffle of numbers from the same time last year, with 44% local buyers, 18% from Bay of Plenty and then 16% from Auckland. And this is still a similar to picture to a couple of years ago, prior to Covid. A noticeable trend over the past few years has been a decrease in non-New Zealand residents purchasing residential property, since legislation changes in late 2018.

What does this mean for you? If you’re thinking about selling your property, having an agent who has a quality database of buyers, knows where the ideal buyer is located and where to invest your marketing, is key. Finding your buyer and obtaining the best price and terms of sale for your property isn’t like finding a needle in a haystack - it’s an exact science. We make it our business to do the research, target the right regions and demographics, advise our vendors on the best places to spend their hard earned money, so they can reach the best possible outcome - a good sale!

We can see that the majority of our buyers are New Zealand residents, we must note that we are selling to Kiwis that could be inside or outside of our country when they see or receive our marketing. So, here at Bayleys we still utilise our international capabilities when marketing properties. Bayleys works in partnership with one of the world’s leading independent real estate consultancies, Knight Frank, to maximise our international capability. So we have the power to introduce your property to our globally connected network, spanning 60 markets.
